A common challenge for many coaches is the desire to share the value of coaching with all the people they know will benefit from it, while at the same time, making a good living as a coach. This “should” be easy, but for some coaches it’s not.

School of Coaching Mastery First to Be Licensed by the IAC

Last night, Angela Spaxman, IAC President, emailed me that the license for the new IAC Coaching Masteries was finally ready. After a few glitches, I succeeded to buying a license for School of Coaching Mastery and our parent company, Julia Stewart Coaching & Training LLC.

I think we are the first!! Good thing! We've been teaching them for over a year and a half!

SCM students probably won't notice any difference, since we've been operating with a verbal agreement all along, but it's nice to have bragging rights!

Personally, I'd like to see more hoops for schools and mentors to leap through in order to become IAC licensees. As it stands, it's a lot easier to buy a license than to become an IAC Certified Coach. That could lead to a lot of disappointed coaches who may study with folks who are clueless about what it takes to pass this tough certification.

Then again, maybe I'm just being self-serving since all of our instructors, mentors and advisors are IAC Certified Coaches, some are founding members of the IAC and some contributed to the establishment of this certification and are or have been Certifiers for the IAC. Collectively, we've taught, mentored or certified most of the current IAC Certified Coaches. Maybe I just want to crow a little!

As coaches, we know the drill: True transformation with our clients can only happen when we are free of an agenda.

But why is this so important and how do we achieve this all important agenda-free status?

The answers to these questions can be found in modern neuroscience research and a self- reflective look into how you, as a coach, could be just as susceptible as your clients to inferential thinking.

First, let’s define what we mean by agenda. An agenda implies having a list of discrete items for which certain outcomes are expected. Many of us share a common conditioning that comes from cultural socializing that has us ask questions in which we have an expectation of an answer. In other words, questions are often used as tools to elicit a specific response. When this approach is used in coaching it considerably limits the possibilities for transformation.

“Neuroscience is showing us how thoughts shape reality. The brain’s 100 billion neurons connect in diverse combinations called neural networks. When we welcome new thoughts and experiences, our neurons respond by wiring together, a learning process termed neural plasticity. Through concentration and repetition of thoughts, neural circuits become ‘hard wired’.” (Your Immortal Brain, by Dr. Joe Dispenza ). When questions are used simply to reinforce what someone already knows, this maintains the hard wiring of neural circuitry and transformation doesn’t stand much of a chance!

In contrast, the coach who listens without the distraction of their own thoughts hears what the client is expressing on all levels and is able to form questions without any expectation of a “correct” response. This opens the possibility for the client to re-wire their neural networks and allows new connections to grow.

Look at how powerfully this supports some of the coaching principles that define our profession:

· Cultivating mutual trust and respect happens organically when the client is free to express fully without concern that someone’s will is being imposed upon them.

· Your ability to remain centered on the client and in the present moment increases dramatically.

· Tailoring systems that support and sustain growth are also often the result of not having an agenda.

This has the potential to become a feedback loop of transformation which can benefit both you and your clients exponentially.

Coaching vs. Therapy: The Ick Factor

The coaching vs. therapy issue came up for me in two completely different episodes the other day. One was in a coaching session that I observed where a coach/therapist brilliantly used a therapy technique and got the response they were after, but elicited considerable resistance from the client, in the process.* It took me by surprise, because it clearly wasn't part of the coaching "rule book" and it became a catalyst for some reflection, on my part, about what actually defines a boundary between coaching and therapy, because as you know, they are very different professional services that do overlap in a number of areas...

Why Do Most Marketing Programs for Coaches Fail?

Do you remember those paint-by-numbers kits that kids used to buy at the craft store? You'd get a canvas with lines and numbers all over it and several pots of paint with corresponding numbers. Just match up the numbers and Voila! You had an "original" oil painting. What a fun way to pretend you're an artist! My mother used to occupy us with such things on snow days (I'm getting snowed in again, right now, which is why I'm glad I work at home)!

Most marketing and sales books, seminars, products and trainings are like paint-by-numbers. You get sure-fire steps to marketing your business (and oh-by-the-way, the person who created it claims to have made millions with exactly this method). Just follow their steps and you'll be successful too!

What a fun way to pretend you're a marketer. Are you making millions yet?

If not, I may know why: You and your business, not to mention your market, time and place; are all different from the person who "made millions" and that's a really good thing, because if you weren't, you wouldn't have a prayer of standing out amongst the sea of other marketers.

I heard from a number of coaches after they viewed the Penn & Teller Life Coaching videos below, who reported feeling mildly traumatized ("skeeved" is probably a better word) by how crummy the featured coaches appeared.

I think after all the "How Not to Coach" videos that I've run in the Mastery Coach Exchange, it's time I showed you one that displays true masterful coaching and how it changes lives, both in an instant and for all time.

Bullshit! What Do People Really Think of Coaching?

You may be familiar with the "How Not to Coach" video series in the Mastery Coach Exchange newsletter. My personal favorite is "Dick Sturgeon Life Coach", the guy who coaches out of his car, with his receptionist in the back seat.

Penn & Teller's Bullshit series on Showtime recently devoted a whole show to life coaching and although someone uploaded it (in 3 sections) to YouTube, it really doesn't fit the "How Not to Coach Format", so I thought I'd post the whole thing here and offer it up for buzz at the Mastery Coach Exchange forum.

It's not that Penn & Teller aren't un-evolved enough to qualify for "How Not to Coach". In fact, they're so stuck they can't figure out why anyone would even hire with a coach. Ah, good ol' self selection, it works right every time!

Disclosure: I never watch Penn & Teller's shows. I first saw them live in the 1980's before anyone knew who they were at an after-gala party for the Dance industry's Bessie awards at the (then) new Tunnel nightclub. All I remember is that they threw bagels at us and they weren't funny. I've avoided them since!

All that said, there's plenty to be embarrassed about by these featured coaches: The jargon, the voices dripping with meaning, the joyless coach who coaches on joy, the guy who talks about himself in the third person...Yuk! By the end of the show, I was almost wishing the profession would get some regulation! Oh and then there's the coaching school that charges $5000 for 18 hours of training. Makes SCM look like a bargain (200 hours for $3600) and we'll teach you enough that you'll actually know what you're doing! Thank God for IAC certification. (None of these people would pass it.)

Should you avoid coaching just because there are weirdos in it, or because some folks make fun of it? Of course not! Most coaches are professionals with high standards and integrity, with training, experience and certification to back them up. People make fun of us because we're having an impact. It's easy to hit a big target. My ex-husband, the lawyer, thinks coaching is BS, too. Oh well, I guess I should have gone into something more respectable, like law, cuz nobody makes fun of them, right? ;-)

P&T even bring in a guy who claims to be an expert on what's wrong with coaching. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to know the difference between coaching and therapy. Can you catch the mistakes he makes in his commentary? How much of what P&T criticize do you think is a function of their own lack of awareness and how much is legit crit? Do you think any of these coaches have credibility? Do you wonder why they agreed to be on the show? What distinctions do you make between them and yourself, as a professional? And finally, How does it make you FEEEEL? (tehe)

Is the Window of Opportunity Closing on Your Dream of Coach Certification?

Today I got a call from a coach I knew years ago. He was trying to access the IAC website to finish their online certification test on the old Proficiencies before it’s taken down on January 1^st and wondered if he still had time to get certified.

Yes, there’s still time – three days. So, if you haven’t gotten certified in the Proficiencies yet, then it’s probably time for you to begin studying the Masteries! ;-)

Are the Masteries just the old Proficiencies with different language? No.

I taught Thomas Leonard’s Proficiencies for years. They were a big upgrade in coaching technology at the time. Teaching them was priceless learning for me AND now that I’m teaching the new Masteries, I’m quadrupling what I’m learning.

I’m also shocked (and thrilled) to see how fast new coaches are learning mastery, using SCM’s unique approach to coach training. When I reflect on the teleclass format we used at the schools I studied at, as well as those I previous taught at, all I can say is “WHAT WERE WE THINKING??”

Of course graduates of those coaching schools got stuck in limbo, neither masterful nor successful, when their primary way to learn coaching was to get on a phone line and listen to somebody else talk about coaching (while students answered their email, cleaned house, or - like me - worked out)!

That’s crazy.

You need to be fully engaged in class, using new skills as soon as you learn them and getting precise feedback right away from an expert, so you can step into mastery immediately. Otherwise, you could spend a lifetime in triads and study groups without ever knowing if you’re getting it right or not.

I’ve been preparing coaches for IAC certification since it came into being, because it’s based on the one thing clients care about: masterful coaching. And these current newbies are going to coach better than us veterans pretty soon. Exciting – and kinda scary!

School of Coaching Mastery seems to have struck a nerve in the coaching community. The IAC is welcoming us with open arms and a number of individual coaches are actively supporting us and getting the word out that we are here.

I'll be posting more on that in coming days (At least I hope I will! Between preparing the Coaching Guides, getting the new classes scheduled and answering questions from new coaches who are interested in joining, I hardly have time to think about my blogs, much less post! Thank god I have a couple of interns and a new personal assistant to help me speed things up.)

We got a great bounce in traffic recently from from Michele Caron (pictured), creator of the website, www.mylifecoach.com, which for years has consistently been one of the highest ranking sites for Google searches of the keyword, "life coach". Michele is possibly the only full-time life coach I know who gets all of her clients from her website and she's an awesome coach, too! She recently sent an email out to coaches on her list who are looking for a coaching school and sent them to SCM.

Top Ten Ways You Can Become a Masterful Coach

What’s the fastest way for you to become a masterful coach? It depends on your learning style and how committed you are to the process. For best results, combine at least several of the methods listed below.

1. Listen to coaching classes. Passive attendance in coaching classes is probably the most common method that people use to learn to coach and it can work - eventually. Problem is, you’re not really learning coaching, you’re just learning about coaching. (Big distinction.) School of Coaching Mastery has many classes you can listen to and we encourage you to do far more than that, as well. Read on…

2. Listen to masterful coaching demonstrations. Here, you’re getting much closer to learning to coach. You’re hearing what works. (However, sometimes hearing what doesn’t work is even more enlightening and actually practicing coaching is better still!) All our coaching skills classes include coaching demonstrations from some of the top instructors in the field.

3. Practice coaching other coaches. This is a fantastic way to learn, because it strengthens your coaching muscles and gives you a safe space to make mistakes. (To get full value, though, you need to be willing to screw up in front of your friends! ;-) SCM coaching skills eClasses always include practice periods where everyone gets a chance to use what they just learned and we encourage you to practice outside classes and give you tools for finding practice partners, a.k.a. “coaching buddies”, easily.

4. Get expert verbal feedback on your coaching. This is one of the best ways to learn. Get immediate feedback from an expert. Some coaches are afraid to experience this, but when done well, it’s inspiring, not painful. You learn what works, what doesn’t, why you got stuck, why you succeeded, and/or why the client resisted and how to do it even better next time. Great stuff! (Why struggle along, not knowing if you’re doing it right?) At SCM you’ll get frequent feedback on your coaching from your instructors in class. Without it, learning coaching skills can feel like target practice in a dark room!

5. Listen to recordings of yourself coaching. This is priceless! You’ll be surprised what you hear and what you learn. (The President of the IAC, Natalie Tucker Miller, IAC-CC, says she still records her coaching sessions for her own learning.) Your SCM eClasses are all recorded and you’ll receive those recordings by email within 24 hours, so you can hear everything you may have missed.

6. Read expert written notes about your coaching. This is even more powerful when you follow up verbal feedback with reading written notes and listening to the recording of your coaching session. Big “Aha’s” happen here. (As one coach put it, “Now I’m not flying blind, anymore!”) You’ll get frequent written feedback on your coaching if you take our 36 Masteries eClasses. We don’t know of another coaching school that does this for its students.

7. Listen to your peers coach and take detailed notes. This uses your brain in a whole different way. When you write down what you’re hearing, you’re imprinting what you’re learning. SCM Masteries eClasses use specially-designed scorecards to speed up your learning this way and you can use these scorecards to score yourself when you listen to recordings of your own coaching, too.

8. Give verbal feedback to your peers about their coaching. When you articulate specific feedback about what you heard (Not just “It was nice”), you take a stand for what you know and you find out quickly if you’re on the right track. You’ll learn how to deliver excellent feedback in our Masteries eClasses. Learning to do this, while being in service to your colleagues' learning, is fun!

9. Meet in study groups with your peers. No “experts” allowed! Without the presence of a teacher or any other “expert”, coaches start to step up and take ownership of what they know. Often, this is a crucial final step to becoming masterful. (Peer-to-peer learning is powerful!) 10. Coaching real clients. (What a concept! ;-). This obviously is what you’re preparing for. Coach real people in real situations. Develop ongoing relationships with clients, because that relationship is about a lot more than one coaching session. If you can get feedback from your clients, that’s a hundred times better. You know you're hearing great coaching in class when the both coach and client are so intrigued that they can't wait to set up another coaching call! It's happening a lot on the SCM Module calls. Each mastery is covered in four two-hour eClasses. Each class covers an one aspect of that Mastery with a Coaching Guide, discussion and demonstration by the instructor, followed by the coaches dividing up into triads for an hour of practice and observation, with the instructor dropping in to each triad for additional feedback. All of it is recorded for review and each Module gets its own web page with graphics for the students to follow in class.

What the School of Coaching Mastery is About

If you're on one of my mailing lists, you may already have heard a little about SCM's mission. As far as we know (and I've been in conversation with IAC board members and Certifiers about this) this is the first coaching school in the world designed specifically to prepare coaches for International Association of Coaching (IAC) Coach Certification.

This is significant because IAC Certification is increasingly recognized as the "Gold Standard" in coach certification. (Even, rumor has it, among ICF credentialed coaches!)

The very first SCM eClass took place on Thursday, June 7th and I'm very pleased! Fantastic coaches have joined up for the first beta Module and we heard some great coaching during their practice sessions. It's clear that many of these coaches are ready to move into mastery ~ Whoopee!

Speaking of which: One of our SCM members just found out that she passed IAC Certification, the day before class started! I can't claim SCM prepared her, obviously ~ I'm just proud to be attracting coaches who have such high standards for the quality of their own work.
